New Jersey Police Nab Courier in $50,000 Tech-Support Scam Targeting a Senior Citizen
New Jersey police have arrested a suspected courier tied to a tech-support scam that drained $50,000 from an elderly resident.
Berkeley Township Police said the scam began when the victim received a computer pop-up claiming to be from Microsoft and instructing her to call a phone number, reports Lakewood Alerts.
The call connected her with scammers posing as Microsoft and Wells Fargo representatives. They allegedly told the woman that her bank accounts had been compromised and convinced her that she needed to move her money to keep it safe.
Believing the callers were legitimate, the victim mailed a $50,000 cashier’s check.
But the scammers didn’t stop there.
They continued contacting the woman daily and eventually demanded another $30,000, claiming a courier would come to her home to collect the cash and place it in “safekeeping.”
The victim contacted police, who began monitoring the residence while she continued communicating with the scammers.
On Friday, August 14th, officers spotted a gray Toyota RAV4 arriving near the home after the victim was told the courier was on the way.
Police arrested 24-year-old Gurdutt Singh of South Richmond, New York.
Singh was charged with conspiracy to commit third-degree theft by deception and conspiracy to commit third-degree money laundering. He was taken to the Ocean County Jail pending further court proceedings.
Tech-support scams frequently target older adults through fake alerts and remote access demands, contributing to billions in annual losses reported by seniors, according to federal data.
