Google To Hand Out $8,250,000 To Settle Lawsuit Alleging Collection of Personal Information From Under 13-Year-Olds Without Parental Consent
An $8.25 million class action settlement is on the table amid allegations that tech titan Google violated the privacy rights of minors.
In a 2023 class action lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California, the plaintiffs allege that Google LLC and AdMob Google Inc. collected, used and disclosed personal information of children under 13 years of age using Google Play applications without parental consent.
The plaintiffs also claim that Google collected and used the data for targeted behavioral advertising in violation of state and federal law, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
The class members include US residents under 13 years old at any time between April 1st, 2015, and the present who downloaded or used an app from Google Play.
The $8.25 million settlement will cover the cost of attorneys’ fees, settlement administration, class representative service awards and other expenses. The remaining funds will be distributed to eligible claimants on a pro-rata basis.
Google denies the allegations and any and all wrongdoing and says it decided to settle to avoid the costs and risks of a trial.
Claims must be filed online or by mail by September 14th, with the deadline to opt out or object on August 4th. The final approval hearing is slated for September 24th.
