Thousands of dollars meant for rent at a Florida senior housing facility were allegedly pocketed by a staff member instead of reaching the housing authority.
The former worker of the Jacksonville Housing Authority (JHA), Annie Marie Grant, accepted money orders from residents for housing costs, signed them over to herself, and used a mobile banking app to deposit the funds into personal accounts before moving some to PayPal, reports First Coast News.
An investigation by the City of Jacksonville Office of Inspector General uncovered the scheme after complaints from residents who had handed over the payments specifically for rent.
Officials traced at least $10,625 in suspected to have been misdirected from the residents to Grant’s accounts.
“Further analysis by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) revealed that between May 5, 2021, and April 8, 2022, GRANT stole over $10,000 by receiving residents’ rent money orders, depositing them into her financial account, and transferring funds into her PayPal account. The investigation traced and verified at least $10,625.50 in stolen money orders deposited into Grant’s accounts.”
The State Attorney’s Office of the Fourth Judicial Circuit filed charges of exploitation of an aged adult in the $10,000 to $50,000 range.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office deputies made the arrest in June, and the housing authority later fired the employee for theft while pursuing full repayment and a prison sentence.
Residents confirmed to investigators that the payments were intended solely for their housing obligations.
