A diagnostics company that provides testing and laboratory services to healthcare providers says it suffered a major cybersecurity incident that may have exposed the records of hundreds of thousands of individuals.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the breach at New Jersey-based Centers Laboratory is reported as a “Hacking/IT Incident” and affected 542,377 people.

In a notice posted on its website, the firm says an unauthorized entity gained access to its systems and stole data that may include patients’ dates of birth, driver’s licenses or state identifications, Social Security numbers, passport numbers, and health insurance and medical records.

“Centers learned of suspicious activity in its IT environment on August 25, 2025. Upon learning this, Centers quickly isolated the impacted systems and launched an investigation with the assistance of third-party forensic specialists. This investigation revealed that an unauthorized actor gained limited access to data on Centers’ systems between August 9, 2025, and August 14, 2025, at which time the unauthorized actor copied data. Centers then engaged third-party data review specialists to perform a detailed review of the information involved to determine whether it was sensitive, and to whom it related. Following the third-party review, Centers undertook a comprehensive internal review of the records to validate the information and proceed with providing notifications.”

Centers Laboratory says it is now urging affected individuals to take advantage of one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. For now, the company says it has hardened its defenses related to data privacy and security to prevent a similar event in the future.
